- Innovation in Media Panel: Market Fragmentation, Explosion of Online Content Transform Media Business
- Professor T. Ravichandran hosted a panel of industry experts for “Understanding the Transformations in the Media Industry.” The forum explored issues facing the industry, including new technologies to create and distribute content, proliferation of choice, shifts in consumer attitudes and usage, and convergence of media formats. Panelists also talked about how revenue streams and cost structures of media organizations have changed, causing them to rethink their long-standing business models.
- Experts Identify Opportunities for Innovation in the Business of Health Care
- On October 21, The Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship and the Lally School gathered experts from different sectors of the health care industry to share insights on challenges and opportunities for innovation in the business of health care. Dr. Gina O’Connor, Associate Professor of Marketing at Lally, moderated the panel, which included: Sue Ellen Wagner, Executive Director, Health Care Trustees of New York State; Eileen Murphy, COO, Price Waterhouse Cooper SMART Practice; Dr. John Bennett '74, President and CEO, Capital District Physician’s Health Plan; Omid Moghadam, Personal Geonomics Researcher, Harvard Medical School; and Dr. Patrice Milos '84, VP and Chief Scientific Officer, Helicos Biosciences.
- Herman Fellows Victoria Kruse MBA ’11 and Cara Jones ’01, MBA ’09 Attend Women Entrepreneurs Reunion with Mike Herman ’62
- Fellowship Sponsors Michael and Karen Herman hosted the annual Herman Family Fellows Reunion November 6 at the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Lally Assistant Dean Jill Terry also attended. The reunions allow current and former Herman Fellows to network and discuss their entrepreneurial efforts, and also include a panel of visiting female entrepreneurs.
- Lally Student Leaders, Including Grand Marshal, Volunteer for Troy Community Service Project
- Lally undergraduates Michael Zwack ’11, Phil Sarid ’12 and Joe Young ’12 were among a group of 13 student volunteers participating in the Student Senate’s cleanup of the People’s Avenue Approach to the Rensselaer Campus. Zwack, a Lally junior, is also Rensselaer’s Grand Marshal, the highest elected office in the Rensselaer Student Government, who serves as the leader and chief spokesperson for the Rensselaer Union.

- Lally’s New Center for Global Business and Political Economy Presents Faculty Research on International Team Behavior, Global Case Studies
- The Center for Global Business and Political Economy was created to advance understanding of the interdependency of business and the global political economy, and to help people learn how to do business in diverse environments around the world. The Center will support research as well as innovative curriculum development and delivery. The Center was inaugurated with presentations of ongoing and recently published international research by Lally faculty members. Research covered behavior in multinational teams as well as case studies on doing business in Argentina, Egypt, and Sri Lanka.
- New Clermont Featured in Scientific American—Students Complete 240 km Voyage Powered by Hydrogen
- In 1807, Robert Fulton built the Clermont, the world's first commercial steamboat, and made the trip from New York City to Albany, proving that steam was a viable source for water transportation. Fulton’s voyage launched the age of steam, and put steam power at the forefront of transportation technology. Just as Fulton sought to prove the feasibility of steam power, the New Clermont Project aimed to prove the viability of green, pollution-free hydrogen fuel cells as a power source. Rensselaer students spent the spring and summer fitting the New Clermont boat with a unique engine modified to accept power from hydrogen fuel cells. Then, this fall, the New Clermont retraced Fulton’s famous voyage, powered not by steam, but by hydrogen. Three Lally Students were members of the crew: Will Gathright MS ’10 Management and PhD Candidate in Materials Science & Engineering, Leah Rollhaus MBA ’10, and Michael Mullaney MBA ’11. The project raised public awareness of hydrogen energy and showcased the tenacity and entrepreneurial ethic of RPI students.
- Nobel Laureate Ivar Giaever PhD ’64 Speaks to Lally Students about Entrepreneurship, Taking Risks, and Biotech R & D
- Dr. Giaever spoke to Lally students in Professor Pier Abetti’s Management of Research and Development Class about winning the Nobel prize, his career in research, his experience as an inventor, and the challenges of founding and running a technology-based company. Dr. Giaever shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1973 for his work in solid-state physics. In 1991, he co-founded and currently serves as Chief Technology Officer of Applied BioPhysics, a company that manufactures an instrument for monitoring the behavior of cells in tissue culture.

- The Lally Innovation Competition invites prospective MBAs to develop creative business solutions to societal problems in the areas of entrepreneurship, finance, and global leadership. Winners will receive up to $60,000 in a full or partial tuition scholarship to the Lally School MBA Program.

- As one of its signature thrusts, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has committed to research and appreciation of the relationship between energy and the environment. As part of the Lally Innovation Series, this panel discussion explored innovation in the distribution of electricity--the key source of energy in the modern economy.

- Lally’s MS FERA Program Participates in National Financial Mathematics Career Fair
- The Lally School’s Financial Engineering and Risk Analytics (FERA) program is among a select group of Financial Engineering programs participating in the National Financial Mathematics Career Fair on October 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in New York City.
- Lally Professor Aparna Gupta Part of Research Team Receiving $318K NSF Grant through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)
- Gupta’s research collaboration with Professor Koushik Kar in the Department of Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering received one of 19 ARRA grants awarded to Rensselaer totaling $4.8 million. Gupta and Kar will be working with Saswati Sakar, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. Their multidisciplinary research project will examine the rapidly growing market for wireless transmission services.

- PayScale Ranks Rensselaer Degree in Top 15 for Best Return on Investment
- The New York Times reports that a survey by PayScale shows that Rensselaer is highly competitive with elite U.S. universities when comparing graduates’ salaries throughout their careers. PayScale, a website that collects data on salaries in different professions, says the purpose of releasing the data is to show which colleges are the ‘best investment.’

- For the first time in history, three Fulbright Scholars are enrolled in the same MBA class at The Lally School of Management & Technology. First year MBAs Madgledis “Maggie” Almanza and Rolando Binns both received Fulbrights from Panama; Atif Abdul Majeed is an honoree from Pakistan. They joined an increasingly global Lally MBA program, which currently hosts students from 13 countries, with PhD candidates adding another 5 countries to the mix.
- Former Severino Center Visiting Scholar Leads Incubator Development in Vietnam
- Thao Ly, the fall 2008 visiting scholar in-residence hosted by the Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship, returned to her native Vietnam in January, and is now the Program Manager of the Saigon Hi-Tech Business Incubator (SHBI). SHBI is currently in the start-up stage, and Ly is executing its marketing strategy to secure the Incubator’s first tenants. The SHBI’s primary focus is on training Vietnamese entrepreneurs in business administration, and to provide working facilities, IT services, and consulting and training assistance.

- Lally MBA Fulbright Scholar Presents Ideas at Washington, DC Conference
- Atif Abdul Majeed, MBA ’10 and Fulbright Scholar from Pakistan, recently attended a conference in Washington, DC with 160 Fulbright scholars from 85 countries. Students were divided into 8 teams, which were each assigned an issue of global concern and asked to propose solutions. Atif’s group worked on economic development. Atif reported to Professor Ravichandran that his Lally training was put to good use.

- A.P. “Preetham” Parigi, travelled halfway around the world to accept the 2009 Rensselaer Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Parigi led the meteoric rise of Radio Mirchi, India’s leading radio network, using bold branding and innovative programming. Today, Radio Mirchi reaches more than 200 million listeners in 32 cities and 10 languages.
